A colour negative's orange mask is a constant per-channel gain in linear space — exactly what auto-white-balance fights and loses to. In density space (d = −log₁₀(transmission)) that mask becomes a constant offset you can simply subtract. Positive samples the clear film base once, removes the mask, and flips the negative — a physically correct inversion. Everything else (tone, temperature, saturation) is taste applied on top.
